Research Interests

  • Virtualization and Cloud Computing: Enhancing the performance, security, and efficiency of virtualized environments through innovative solutions for virtual machine management, device assignment, interrupt handling, and hypervisor-VM interactions.
  • Operating Systems and Memory Management: Addressing memory access bottlenecks, optimizing page tables and TLB management, and developing novel approaches to memory disaggregation, overcommitment, and efficient resource allocation.
  • Systems Security: Protecting against hardware vulnerabilities, DMA attacks, and side-channel exploits, with a focus on IOMMU-based security, mitigating transient execution vulnerabilities, and enhancing system-level isolation.
  • I/O and Hardware Acceleration: Improving I/O performance in virtualized and bare-metal environments, enabling efficient direct device assignment, and optimizing hardware-software interfaces for storage and networking.

Current Projects

PolyKernel

Operating systems today force system-wide tradeoffs between security, performance, and debugging capabilities. PolyKernel enables context-specific kernel behavior, allowing security-critical applications to run with full instrumentation while performance-sensitive workloads maintain optimal efficiency—all within the same system. No longer must organizations choose between robust debugging capabilities and peak performance.

SuperHuge

Modern computing systems leave significant performance potential untapped through underutilization of huge pages. While these larger memory pages can dramatically improve TLB efficiency and reduce address translation overhead, adoption remains limited in many critical domains. SuperHuge explores how current memory management APIs create barriers to adoption and develops novel approaches to extend huge page benefits to previously resistant workloads, enabling systems to maximize performance without sacrificing flexibility.
